You guys all know that prayer is kind of my thing, right? But do you know why?
Prayer kept me connected when I wanted to run away. Praying God’s Word for my boys reminded me of His many promises and fueled my faith. I had just enough faith to believe He would be true to His word … so I prayed it back to Him over and over .
On my knees, God gave me peace.
On my knees, God gave me comfort.
On my knees, God corrected me … exposed my sin.
On my knees, God met my needs, healed my heart, and increased my belief in His goodness … and over the years, God has used my prayers to change the hearts of my boys. I believe it.
Prayer is the fuel of my motherhood, what puts me back together when I fall apart (<—Tweet That!). So, yeah, you might say it’s my thing.
“I pray because I don’t have all the answers. I pray because I’m lost and can’t see the big picture. I pray because I’m desperate for a word-touch from the God who made me and because I can’t do this life thing without his direction. I pray because I don’t know how to raise these two boys to be the godly men I dream they will be, but I serve the God who does. Believing that has changed my life.” Praying for Boys: Asking God for the Things They Need Most.
Over the next four days, I’m going to share with you the things I pray the most for my boys:
1. That they would be men of God
2. Men of purpose (click here to read this post)
3. Servant leaders, and …
4. Men of integrity
These things are more important to me than education, money, family, or fame … more important than anything else I can think of. They’re not rocket science, and I have no special insight into the Word of God that will make them happen. They’re just my dreams for God to make my boys into good men, and to be good men, they must be men of God. So let’s start there.
4 Verses to Pray to Help Our Sons Be Men of God
What is good apart from God? Only God is truly good (Mark 10:18), and sadly, even our best attempts at goodness fall pitifully short of God’s standard (Isaiah 64:6). It isn’t enough to be good as the world defines it. There are millions of “good” men out there. Men who love well, protect, serve. But if their hearts don’t belong to Jesus, it’s all for naught.
So I pray for my sons to be truly good men of God.
1. Lord, give (your son’s name) a heart softened toward you.
“Give him a new heart and a new spirit put within him. Remove the heart of stone from his flesh and give him a heart of flesh” (Ezekiel 36:26).
2. Lord, give (your son’s name) a clean heart.
“Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a right spirit within me” (Psalm 51:10).
3. Lord, let (your son’s name) desire you alone.
“One thing have I asked of the LORD, that will I seek after: that I may dwell in the house of the LORD all the days of my life, to gaze upon the beauty of the LORD and to inquire in his temple”
(Psalm 27:4).
4. Lord, may (your son’s name) find his strength, and the true power of manhood, in you.
“But he said to me, ‘My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.’ Therefore I will boast all the more gladly of my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ may rest upon me” (2 Corinthians 12:9).
Today, add these verses to your prayer time. As you do, allow God to change your understanding of what a good man truly is. If he doesn’t have a dad who is a model of these things for him, pray for dad too, and join me tomorrow as we pray to help our boys be men of purpose!

Hi, I enjoyed reading your post. I do not have sons, but I am the mom of a 4 yr old daughter. These mostly still apply. I want her to grow up sensitive to the Lord, with integrity and confidence in Jesus. Those are the best things a mother could pray for their child. Thanks!
I have 2 daughters and 2 sons, all in their 30s and 40s. Only one of my kids is walking with the Lord. His brother (our other son) is going through a crisis with one of his kids, our 14year old granddaughter. I have been praying fervently for this child. Now God is confirming to me that the healing needs to begin with our son. He knows the Lord, but made some bad choices along the way. I so pray that David will have the courage to own up to his mistakes and comeback to Jesus and be a man of God.
To Carol. We have 3 young children, the oldest 9, and as i see them each reach another birthday, my fear gets larger, the ‘what ifs’ become innumberable. What if we dont do a good enough job raising them? What if they choose different then what weve taught? And from that…oh dear, my worries could drive me sick!
I pray that the Lord has helped you get some clarity in your situation! Ill say a prayer for you and pray that you feel Him take the situation and turn it for good to Him. May God Bless you!
Brooke I have a 45 year old son and he has 2 beautiful daughters. He has been a great Father he knows God he took the kids to church and he taught both of them how to pray. The ways of the court system has practically kicked him out of the girls life. DCF has removed them from the mother 3 times over the past 4 years. This last time in August when they were returned to her yet again my son lost it. Started drinking smoking K2 and has been arrested and then violated probation and they put him in jail. He goes to all the Christian activities there Brother Jim told me he’s a good leader he brings other men to Jesus. He was suffering from EED they tell me. My concerns what about when he gets out. I’m so very scared it will all play out all over again. I’m 70 now and I’m somewhat disabled spinal injury and 5 surgeries I’m dirt poor but I pray all the time. I can’t do this anymore. Do you have a plan for that?
Francesca , I do not know you but I will be praying for your son. My heart broke reading your post. I am a mother of two sons 13 and 6,but one day they will be grown up men and I can’t imagine how you feel, motherhood never ends , the love for our children just like the love of God for us ,never ends, . God bless you and give you health I will keep you in my prayers. Yovanna.
Brooke, this is what I needed at this time. My son who is in his thirty’s is having a life of difficulties. And sees everyone else as his problem. He once accepted the Lord but is not repenting and renewing his mind. Pray for a powerful move of Jesus on his life to turn him around. Thank you for these prayers , as I have become weary. My hope is renewed God Bless
I have an almost identical request for my son, still a single man also in his early thirties. Today, Father’s Day, I am broken-hearted for “J” who has severed relationship from his own father, a man who has sought God and followed Him as a good example to “J” all his life. Son is angry with us for how we have proceeded in loving and showing mercy to his younger sister after years of her running from God. Now, son is running away from God. Our family is split apart from each other. Husband and I remain faithful to the Lord, but our wounds are deep.
Hi, I enjoyed reading your post, my prayer request is for my 32 year old son to be serious with the Lord and to get married.
These are great prayers! My son is 3 and I pray for him all the time because I am saved by the grace of God.I have the same fears all of you do and I use to make myself sick over it but God spoke to my heart and said I need to believe and have faith in the prayers I pray and I need to stay hopeful and not hope less. Even if my son does not become saved when I want him to, as long as I did my best to lay that foundation, I need to have faith he will take care of the rest and my son will look back on that foundation I laid and I have faith he will make the right choice even if he doesn’t become saved when he is a child, I have done my part as a mother and woman of faith. Cast your care, God is awesome all the time even if things don’t go your way, he is working in your life and anyone you pray for but regardless it is their choice.
Funny how I just ran across this post..i needed this tonight. My son who is almost 19..well it’s a long story but I will be adding these verses to my prayers. I have no regrets on the way I raised him. I lost my husband..his dad almost 13 years ago. I know I gave in a lot because of this. But he was raised right. In church and around Christian people. But he turned 18 and it’s like he forgot everything. It seems like God is the last thing on his mind.Hes with the wrong crowd for sure. Also has a baby on the way and mom and dad are not together.. I’m just asking for prayer for this situation. I know it changes things. It sure changed me. ..
I have a 13 year old son who is angry with God. My husband died when my son was 2 months old and my daughter was 22 months. My son always tells me he misses not having a dad. I pray that my son will grow into a Godly man and that God will heal his pain from not having his father. I do tell both my children how much their earthly father and Heavenly Father loves them, but for my son that is not enough. I pray God will show him the way. I will keep praying for my son and my daughter.
I have a son in law for whom I have. been praying for 7 years. He has good points but failing here. Please add me t your list and I so much want to find your books. God Bless.Pat
