Raising Real Men :: Book Club {Post One}

I am so excited to share with you all that The Mob Society now has a book club! I am an avid reader, and I love sharing great books with friends. And you, sweet readers, are great friends!

To kick things off, we are starting with our very own Hal and Melanie Young’s book, Raising Real Men: Surviving, Teaching, and Appreciating Boys. I can’t wait to glean knowledge from parents that raise wild, dirty, energetic, testosterone-filled adventuresome creatures, x6. That’s right. They have 6 boy blessings!

Ok, the book.

Intro: The Challenge of Boys/Raising Real Men

According to the Young’s, this book “does not outline a Five Stage Program for Building Godly Men. It does not feature a Master Checklist to Chart Your Way to Family Harmony.” Instead, what this book offers is “a biblical perspective on understanding how boys think, and why that is, and what can and should be done about it.

Throughout this book, the authors have shown how they have taken their sons actions and have compared it to Gods word and biblical masculinity and manly virtues. They stress how, as parents, we should rebuke sin, but not change who our sons are and were created to be. I think that is just awesome! Our culture today wants to feminize our boys. Hal and Melanie, through their book, offer biblical reference for “classic boyhood”.

To add to all this fun, Hal & Melanie are offering several giveaways today!

We’re giving away one hard copy of Raising Real Men

AND a Mom & Dad Special, too - a hard copy for mom to read in the bathroom and an audiobook for Dad to listen to on the commute – it’s $35 when you buy them both together!

PLUS…

Did you know Theodore Roosevelt wrote a book for children?
He did! He wrote a book to teach character and virtue through the stories of American History.
He’s been called “The Most Interesting American” and his book is just that!
The Youngs made it even more interesting, though, by turning it into an audiobook and adding sound effects, too. Ships creaking, gulls cawing, cannon fire, even angry French mobs come together to make history they’ll never forget…
We have TWO of these audiobook sets, Hero Tales, to giveaway today, too!
Phew…that’s a lot of giveaways!
*****
Just leave a comment here before Sunday, February 12th at 10:00 p.m. EST to be entered! Four winners will be chosen at random and notified via email!
THANK YOU to Hal & Melanie for their generosity with today’s giveaways!

    • Lori,

      Although you’re right that time is passing really quickly, don’t despair. Our God is the One who restores the years the locust have eaten! Instead, rejoice that you’ve got four more years and decide you’re going to make the best use of them you can! {{{hugs}}}

      Much love,
      Melanie

  23. Would really like to read this. I am the mom of 5 boys, ages 14 – 22. I’m curious if it’s more aimed at people with younger sons, or if it covers as they grow and leave? ( reckon that’s the ‘Firing the Arrow’ chapter?)
    Winning a copy would be great, but I’ll check it out either way.
    Thanks,
    Lisa

  24. I am really looking forward to this book and book club! It would be great to win a copy – thanks for the chance.

  25. So how does the online book club work? Is there a certain time of the day we show up on Fridays or will there be a post that we can just access at any time of the day? Is it a participatory event for a group or just an individual study? Sorry – this is the first time I’ve obviously tried something like this, and I wasn’t sure how to find any more info about the logistics on the MOB site. Thanks for your patience with me.

  26. Well, I am in such great need of encouragement recently managing my 4 boys (ages 11, 8, 4, and 2) I couldn’t help myself and read through ch 3. Highlighted quote in “Raising Real Men” was “God has placed in our boys a desire to be in charge, because one day they will be in charge. Today’s boys will be the fathers, bosses, and elders, and statesmen of tomorrow.” Thank-you for organizing this book club!

  27. I love this book! Heard Hal and Melanie in 2010 at the HINTS book fair and had to have the book. I’m blogging thru the book with you starting with this post: http://thepelsers.com/2012/02/18/raising-real-men/

  28. Wow! What a blessing MOB!. I am currently the mom of 3 girls and 1 boy and I need help raising him! I am constantly told that he “is all boy!” sometimes that feels like an understatement and just isn’t very comforting. I hope to join in the reading fun!

    Do you have archives of these discussions. Just found the club site & would love to hear the discussions.
