How Sweet The Sound

There has never been a sweeter sound heard in our home, than my boys reciting the Word of God.  They are only three years old, but they are already perfectly capable of hiding Scripture in their hearts.  It’s been so convicting in my own life, as I hear these words repeated and explain how they apply to their young lives.

“A soft answer turns away wrath” has convicted me multiple times to respond with grace and calmness, rather than raising my voice in anger.  “Do everything without grumbling or complaining” is a verse that I can apply daily, if not hourly. Isn’t it humbling how God pierces our own hearts when we’re attempting to impress our own children?

I love to watch them reenact our family devotion time, as they gather their children’s Bibles (or Thomas treasury that they call their Bible), flip through the pages, and talk about Jesus. There is no magical formula to teaching your family the Word of God.  There are wonderful Bible verse memory resources available, and several have been mentioned here at The MOB Society. Our family has been reading My ABC Bible Verses: Hiding God’s Word in Little Hearts* which contains a verse and a short devotional that expounds on the verse. It helps to recall the past verses through being able to remember the letter that corresponds to the verses.

My prayer is that their tender spirits will turn to the Gospel at an early age, and they will never turn their ears from the sweet sound of the written Word of God.

  2. People were surprised that my son could recite John 3:16 at just two years old. His brother did as well. God blessed our efforts at helping them learn the verses early on and He continues to give them the ability to do so now at 6 & 8. It’s never too early to start hiding God’s Word in your heart!

  4. We LOVE this book and use it as our morning devotional before we start school. We’re at “X” today. And I know we’ll go through it again soon. Our next one is her “Big Truths for Little Kids.”

“A soft answer…” has been huge for me too. I love how Susan brings past lessons together to show little ones how God’s Word works together. What a treasure to us moms trying to teach a tough concept!

I also love her books for us grown women. Currently, I’m finishing “The True Woman.”

  5. So sweet.

  6. Jen, I so agree with you that it’s one of the most beautiful sounds! Although I have just one child, my 10-year old, it still thrills my heart (and convicts me to no end!) to hear him reciting verses he’s learned at AWANA. I think that is one of the best organizations for Scripture memory. Kiddo will have memorized HUNDREDS of verses in 7 years he’s been in AWANA. Does he remember all of them? No…but he is hiding so many in his heart…they have helped him so much the past month with my mother’s passing away. And it helps his daddy and me to memorize, as well, as we listen to him recite them.

    What a great post! : )

  7. You are so right! I love hearing God’s word just roll off their tongues! I love hearing them sing praises with gusto and I love hearing them pray! Oh that they would continue to cling to Jesus for the rest of their lives!!!

Keep up the amazing work with your boys – they are ADORABLE!!
